Ice Fishing and Water Quality Testing

Break through the Ice

Ice Fishing and Water Quality Testing

Making most of the winter months, Ice Fishing is the ideal activity to enjoy the outdoors and learn about state of water quality that time of the year. Corporate volunteers will learn about ice fishing equipment, ice safety, fish identification and more during the activity. Water quality deteriorates during winter due to ice mud that goes to waterbodies through pavement drainage systems. Some winter recreation activities also tend to have adverse impacts on the quality of water. Corporate volunteers will be part of a water quality testing activity with the guidance of TUC biologists. Volunteers with sportfishing licenses will have a chance to build teams and take part in friendly ice fishing contests. This program helps to understand the correlation between water quality and fish movement patterns during winter. It also raises awareness about winter recreation management. TUC will coordinate the site selection, safety measures and acquire necessary approvals and permissions. All equipment and supplies will also be provided.

Learning opportunities:

  • Understanding fish movement patterns during winter.
  • Awareness of the negative impact of certain winter recreation activities on wildlife.
  • Hands-on skills on ice fishing techniques and water quality testing.
