Starting Wage: $19/hr
Location: Guelph, ON
Hours: 40 hrs/week; mid-September to late-November; Possibility of extension depending on funding.

Position Mandate:
This job is physically demanding and requires various tasks, including lifting, digging, dragging, and carrying weighted items and operating equipment and hand tools, often in peri-urban or rural settings, sometimes under inclement weather conditions. If you’re ready for a challenge, this position is for you. This position is based in Guelph, but work will be conducted in riparian areas throughout Southern Ontario. Some overnight travel is expected.

Major Responsibilities:
This position requires basic field skills, experience, and excellent teamwork and communication skills. Working under the supervision and direction of the Cooling Streams Coordinator and Conservation Crew Lead, responsibilities include:

  • Assist in executing daily work plans, including invasive species removal, site preparation, tree planting, and post-planting maintenance and monitoring.
  • Collaborate with the Crew Lead and fellow crew members to ensure project objectives are met safely and efficiently.
  • Operate equipment and tools under supervision, always adhering to safety protocols.
  • Participate in community outreach events and assist in creating outreach materials.
  • Support fish and fish habitat monitoring and assessment efforts.
  • Collect data and assist in report preparation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience or knowledge of forestry and ecological restoration
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in forestry, ecology, biology, environmental science, or natural resource management is preferred.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency with chainsaws, brush cutters, and hand tools
  • Dependable, flexible, and resourceful with excellent teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge about freshwater ecology and conservation is an asset.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations is an asset.
  • Class G Driver’s License with good driving record.
  • Chainsaw Operator’s Training & Certification.
  • Forestry Exterminator License is an asset.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification required.
