Join Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) for a fun and educational experience along the North Saskatchewan River on April 29th. The focus of this workday will be to improve riparian health along a section of the North Saskatchewan River with poor riparian health resulting from historic efforts to protect against erosion using concrete debris. Participants will learn about the use of live woody plant species, such as willow and red osier dogwood, to stabilize stream banks, and then get their hands dirty planting live stakes along the river to restore native plant communities.
This project, in Partnership with the City of Edmonton, is part of a larger effort to compensate for fish habitat lost during the Walterdale Bridge replacement. Improving riparian health along this stretch of the riverbank will benefit fish by providing shade, filtering nutrients and sediment from overland runoff before it enters the river, and by providing organic matter in the form of leaves and woody debris to support aquatic food webs and create habitat.
TUC staff and project partners will deliver an introduction and safety briefing prior to the beginning of the workday. All volunteers must sign in with TUC upon arriving in the morning. A sandwich lunch will be provided, please contact email@example.com with any dietary restrictions.
Participation will be capped for safety considerations, if you are registered and are unable to attend please cancel your ticket so that others can be accommodated.
