Cattle Fencing and Alternate Watering (ON) - Happy Trout Chapter

Barrhead fencing
Riparian fencing on Barrhead Creek.
Ontario’s Happy Trout chapter constructed fencing designed to limit cattle from impacting the upper reaches of Barrhead Creek. This part of the creek features several prime spawning areas for brook trout that have been degraded by cattle entering this habitat. The significant groundwater discharge makes this area of Barrhead Creek prime brook trout habitat.

In the future the intent is to reclaim the riparian groundwater discharge zone along with the discrete spring discharges and restore them to productive, reproductive habitats. The chapter also constructed an alternative watering system for the cattle.
